MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Friends of an international student pursuing his master’s degree said he was shot and killed in Little Havana on Sunday.

A witness said they heard shots at around 2 a.m. just north of SW 8th Street, west of I-95.

“We heard five loud shots. Blop. Blop. Blop. Blop,” said a witness who wished not to identify himself.

After seeing the aftermath, he said he called 911.

Paramedics rushed 21-year-old Aila Sai Kiran into an ambulance, but he died at the hospital.

What this witness doesn’t know is why an international student from India was targeted in the dark of night.
“I overhead some cops saying it could have been a robbery for the phone,” said the witness.

Friends of Aila said he had only been in South Florida for about a month to get his master’s in Informational Technology.
“Very quiet guy, doesn’t do anything. Simply go to college and come back,” said his friend, Ram Sheri.

Sheri said he and others are trying to get food for Saikiran’s family.

“We are helping out whatever we can help,” he said.

Meanwhile, this young man is praying for the victim’s family.

“Living through that and seeing that it happened that was an experience. Pretty scary,” the witness said.

Crime scene investigators with the City of Miami Police Department pored over the scene. So far they are only confirming there was a shooting.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -
"It went boom," said Evelyn Adon, who woke up to find a car in her front yard Saturday morning.

Haunting moments leading up to a crash that claimed the lives of three were caught on a surveillance camera.

Miami-Dade police said a Mercedes was likely speeding on NW 47th Avenue near 187th Street when it rear-ended a PT Cruiser. In the video, you can see an explosive, bright flash.

Police said the PT Cruiser landed in someone's front yard after it was thrown into oncoming traffic, colliding with a pickup truck before bursting into flames and killing two people inside.

"I tried to get them out. We were trying. The fire was too much. I wasn't able to do it," said Pena.

"My husband, my son tried to come and help them and he said the guy burned," said Juana Pena.

Family members said inside the was a loving couple, Zoraida and Mariano Miranda, on their way home from watching their grandchildren.

Family members held onto one another for support at the scene of their fiery death.

"Devastated, losing two people at a time. They have two kids leaving behind and three grandkids," said their niece, Maribel Barrios.

Down the block another man was dead. Witnesses said it was a young man who was behind the wheel of the Mercedes. The driver barreled through two yards, a fence and a light pole before coming to a stop.

Surveillance video shows neighbors running to help.

"He took the water hose and was putting water to the car," said neighbor Luis Forentino.

Sight of the first fire truck appears on the video 20 minutes after the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt in the crash.

Miami-Dade Police believe speed may have been the cause of the crash.

Miami Herald

Her sister wailed in agony as Kaely Camacho, a 13-year-old South Miami-Dade cheerleader, lay bloodied and dying in her father’s arms after a drunken driver tore apart their minivan.

The gut-wrenching audio — captured two years ago on a 911 call — was played in court Friday, reducing Kaely’s family to sobs and setting the stage for an outpouring of grief from relatives as raw now as it was two years ago.

“We were a pair. Losing her was, and is, the hardest thing I’ve ever been through,” Bree Ann Camacho, who watched her sister die that morning, told a Miami-Dade judge during a sentencing hearing for Sandor Guillen.

The horrific wreck will cost Guillen 20 years in prison, a tough term for a crash so violent that even veteran police officers were shocked. Guillen, 40, offered no words of remorse to the court.

But his family defiantly insisted Guillen, a “God-fearing” former Coral Gables physical therapy assistant, was innocent despite overwhelming evidence and the jury’s verdict.

“He is not the monster the sensationalist media and social media have portrayed him to be,” said his sister, Sofia Jennings, who ripped police and the court proceedings. “This is nothing short of a modern-day lynching.”

In March, jurors convicted Guillen of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

Prosecutors said Guillen was speeding in a Land Rover — illegally, down the U.S. 1 busway — on an April morning in 2012. He plowed into the Camacho family’s minivan as it headed down Southwest 184th Street toward U.S. 1.

The impact killed Kaely, who was riding with her father, Kirk Camacho, and her 16-year-old sister, Bree Ann. They were on their way to their mother’s house to get ready for school.

The force of the impact tore away the back half of the minivan and caused a plastic cup holder to drill a large, gaping wound into the girl’s skull, killing her.

Police initially found Guillen’s mangled Land Rover empty. But an officer found him in a nearby field. He claimed he had been mugged by unknown attackers.

His DNA was found on the airbag of the Land Rover. Blood tests showed Guillen’s blood alcohol level was .226, nearly triple the legal limit.

“When Sandor Guillen drove that Land Rover, he may as well have been shooting an AK47 into a crowd,” Miami-Dade prosecutor Laura Adams told the judge. “This wasn’t an accident. This defendant was reckless.”

And firing back at the Guillen family claims, Adams added: “The media didn’t kill Kaely.”

Friday’s sentencing was so jam-packed that overflow spectators had to be seated in the jury box. Much of the crowd wore royal blue shirts, Kaely’s favorite color, while police officers lined the courtroom to watch.

Friends of Kaely presented Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer with a petition signed by 3,000 students from three high schools urging her to impose the maximum sentence, 30 years in prison.

One by one, her friends and family spoke about how Kaely’s death — and Guillen’s seeming lack of remorse — had torn them apart. “We are the ones being sentenced to life, life without Kaely,” said her mother, Angela Camacho.

Said her father, Kirk Camacho: “On that day, due to someone’s selfishness and thoughtlessness, I couldn’t do my job. I could not take care of my daughter. I could not protect her. As any parent would know, that’s the hardest thing.”

Guillen faced up to 30 years in prison. While prosecutors asked for a 26-year prison sentence, defense lawyer Jordan Lewin insisted his client had lived an honorable life helping patients in need of physical therapy. He deserved mercy, Lewin said.

But Judge Venzer sternly recounted the evidence, including his attempt to hide after the crash instead of helping the mortally wounded teen.

“Your actions, sir, brought death to a bright-eyed, smart, vibrant 13-year-old little girl with a fantastic future ahead of her,” Venzer said.

A Miami-Dade state attorney’s spokesman, Ed Griffith, said the office respected the sentence, “but we wish he had been given more time.”

Guillen also must serve two years of house arrest, plus another seven of probation after he is released from state prison. He also must make a monetary donation to a charitable donation each year on the date of Kaely’s birthday.

Her relatives, speaking to reporters after the hearing, said they hope Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which supported their anti-DUI efforts, receives the money.

“You haven’t seen the last of us,” Bree Ann Camacho told reporters. “I’m happy with the sentence and we are going to continue to fight and spread awareness of her story as long as I live.”
A search effort is underway after a passenger fell out of a private airplane some 2,000 feet above Biscayne Bay off the Florida coast.

The pilot of the TA 46 Piper Malibu plane called in a mayday to report a door ajar and a passenger that had fallen out of the six-person plane, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said. The plane was traveling around 200 miles per hour when the passenger fell out of the aircraft.

The pilot subsequently safely landed at Tamiami Airport near Miami.

The search is concentrated about eight miles southeast of the airport, the spokesman said.

“We don’t assume anything,” Petty Officer Mark Barney said of the person’s chances of survival. “We’re treating it as a search and rescue operation and going from there.”

Barney said three Miami-Dade Police boats, a Dade County Fire Rescue Helicopter and a Coast Guard rescue boat were participating in the search.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the call came at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
An 18-year-old woman found dead and dumped in a South Miami-Dade construction site early Saturday has been identified as Tiffany Cabreja.

Miami-Dade police on Sunday continued to look for a distinct white commercial truck they believe was driven by the man who dumped Cabreja’s body about 8 a.m. A child, 2 to 3 years old, was seen in the truck, escalating the urgency for police to find the vehicle.

Early Saturday, witnesses saw a body fall out of the passenger-side of the truck driving east on Southwest 288th Street as it turned on Southwest 144th Avenue.

A 5-foot-9, black-haired man in his 30s got out and put the body back in the truck. He sported a dark T-shirt and jeans. Not long after, Miami-Dade police officers discovered Cabreja at the nearby construction site.

Video surveillance captured clear images of the open-caged cargo bed truck, which had a roll-up tarp inside. Letters were also visible on the driver’s side door.

The child’s connection to the driver or Cabreja is not clear; her family told authorities she did not have a child.

“Investigators are concerned for the welfare of the child and are seeking the assistance of the community in locating the child,” acording to a Miami-Dade police press release on Saturday.

Authorities have not released a cause of death for Cabreja.

Anyone with information can call Miami-Dade’s homicide bureau at 305-471-2400 or Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Maritza Medina dropped her daughter at school Wednesday morning and never came home.

The 47-year old mother of two crossed paths with a man who had mortally wounded a woman and her daughter, then led police on a wild, two-county chase that ended when he barreled into Medina’s Mercedes in the far reaches of Broward County.

The impact was so fierce that Medina was ejected when her sedan spun around and split into pieces, scattering metal upon a field on the edge of the Everglades along U.S. 27 shortly before 10 a.m.

As the smoke cleared and Broward sheriff’s deputies arrived, the gunman, Antonio Feliu, 48, fired at least one shot, initiating a tense hourlong standoff with SWAT teams armed with high-powered rifles.

Television stations covered the drama live from helicopters as the law officers surrounded his SUV.

Despite knowing Feliu was armed, one Broward Sheriff’s deputy ran out into the open field and dragged Medina out of harm’s way in the hope that she was still alive.

“He certainly put himself in danger to get her to safety, but unfortunately, she had already died,’’ Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said afterward.

The standoff ended when SWAT teams launched a 40mm canister at the gunman’s rear window, shattering it. They found Feliu slumped behind the wheel, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Feliu’s cross-county trail of terror began about 9:30 a.m. when he shot his estranged girlfriend and then turned the gun on her daughter, killing them both in the efficiency they were renting in the 12300 block of 190th Street in South Miami Heights. Neighbors said they heard three shots about 7:30 a.m., but thought it was fireworks.

His ex-girlfriend, Vivian Gallego Martinez, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 28-year-old daughter, Anabel Benitez, was rushed to Kendall Regional Hospital, where she died.

Homicide detectives are still trying to determine what led to Feliu’s rampage. Records show that Feliu had a litany of traffic infractions and a 2009 arrest for drunken driving. However, there was no history of domestic problems at the address, according to Miami-Dade police.

As police cordoned off the scene, a neighbor recalled seeing Feliu driving the new Mercedes the day before.

“He waved at me yesterday when he drove by. He’s waved before,’’ Clinton Woodson said. But few neighbors knew the family well. The mother and daughter have lived in this country for about five years after emigrating from Santa Clara, Cuba.

The victims’ Facebook pages show them smiling with a newborn infant and fussing over their Yorkshire terrier. Benitez had taken classes at Miami Dade College.

“It’s just a terrible, terrible tragedy,’’ Israel said at a news conference at the scene of the crash.

Meanwhile, by mid-afternoon, cars had filled the driveway at Medina’s home, and family, friends and neighbors struggled with the news.

Her daughter, a high school senior, said she last saw her mother when she dropped her off at school Wednesday morning.

“My dad came to school when I was at lunch. He was crying, and I knew something was wrong,’’ the daughter told WSVN Channel 7.

She said she didn’t know it would be the last time she saw her mother..

“I said ‘goodbye, mom,’ ” the daughter said tearfully of their parting Wednesday morning. “You never really know when you are going to see her for the last time.’’

Neighbors in the upscale community said Medina had been married to her husband, Diego, for about 25 years. She apparently worked in real estate, and records show she also owned a home-improvement business at one time.

“She was always smiling,” said next-door neighbor Ron Dover. “She was just the nicest lady.”

Neighbors said Medina would likely not have been on U.S. 27 had it not been for road barricades that have been the source of an ongoing feud between officials of Southwest Ranches and Pembroke Pines.

In recent years, Ranches closed three north-south streets to prevent Pines motorists from cutting through their neighborhoods. The barricades forced them to take U.S. 27.

“U.S. 27 is known for being dangerous,” said neighbor Frank Crandon. “This should have never happened.”

Medina was the secretary of the Trails of Pembroke Pines Homeowners Association and lived in the well-manicured home with her husband and daughter. Medina also has an older, grown daughter who no longer lives at the home.

Crandon said the family would spend weekends on another property they own in Central Florida, riding horses.

“They were just a good family,’’ he said.

About 5 p.m., two mangled cars were removed from the scene. Zachary Luck, who lives nearby, saw the crash on television. He pointed out that Medina could have been anyone’s mother, daughter, sister or friend; she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I can’t believe how reckless someone can be,” he said of the man in the Mercedes. “What a coward.”
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- A would-be robber is dead after being shot by a store clerk at a South Florida gas station.

The shooting happened just after midnight, Tuesday, at the Exxon near State Road Seven and Southwest 52nd Street. Investigators said two armed robbers barged into the store firing at the store clerk, forcing the clerk to return fire with his own gun. "One tried to rob the gas station, and one was shot by the clerk," said an unidentified employee.

"The clerk was armed, at which point multiple shots were exchanged between the clerk and the suspect; the suspect was struck," said Hollywood Police Sergeant Pablo Venegas.

Police said a homeless man alerted the store clerk prior to the robbery. They said he watched as the two men put on hooded sweatshirts and masks moments before they rushed into the store. "Right behind them, before the clerk had called 911, the suspects entered," said Venegas. "They brandished a firearm."

The wounded would-be robber succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. "It's sad someone died but got to make a living," said the employee.

Police said the second subject was nabbed a few blocks away in a white getaway car.

The store clerk will not face any charges.

Police have identified the two unarmed suspects who were shot dead by Miami-Dade police Friday afternoon, allegedly after a theft at a nearby drug store.

Yolanda Thomas, 34, and Xavier Tyrell Johnson, 31 were killed after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a theft in progress at a CVS at Southwest 117th Avenue and Sunset Drive.

When two officers arrived, security personnel pointed out a car — an older gray Honda Accord — that was just then fleeing..

The woman, driving north on 117th Avenue, lost control and slammed into a barricade post near Miller Drive, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.

“When the officers tried to get out of their vehicle and approach the other vehicle, she attempted to utilize the vehicle to strike an officer,” Zabaleta said. “Shots were fired.”

Two officers fired into the car, killing the woman and wounding a male passenger, who later died.

Zabaleta said one of the officers has been with the department for five years, the other six years. They were not hurt.

Thomas had an extensive record of arrests dating back to May 2000, including disorderly conduct, strong-arm robbery and battery.
Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus hopped onto her bus Tuesday morning, but never made it to school.

The cheery 13-year-old, who loved music, dancing and art, was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow student who had carried a gun onto the school bus.

Miami-Dade police late Tuesday charged 15-year-old Jordyn Alexander Howe with manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm.

On the way to school Tuesday, Jordyn pulled the gun out of his backpack and displayed it, according to an arrest affidavit. The gun went off once, striking Lourdes in the neck.

She was flown to Miami Children’s Hospital, where she died. No one else was injured.

Lourdes and her younger sister were among eight students on the private bus bound for three Homestead area charter schools: Palm Glades Preparatory Academy, where Lourdes was a student; Summerville Advantage Academy, which her sister attended; and Jordyn’s school, Somerset Silver Palms.

The shooting occurred about 6:45 a.m. as the bus was traveling at Southwest 296th Street and 137th Avenue in Homestead, according to Miami-Dade police. The gun was recovered at the scene.

An 11-year-old girl on the bus immediately used her cellphone to call her mother.

“I’m very lucky she was OK,’’ her mother told reporters at the scene.

Other parents flocked to Palm Glades to pick up their children. Grief counselors were also at the school.

Jordyn was taken to Miami-Dade police headquarters where he provided a sworn statement, the affidavit said. On Tuesday night, he was taken to Miami-Dade Juvenile Assessment Center.

Faced with damning DNA evidence, police say, Alberto Luis Sierra finally confessed to suffocating his estranged wife and two young step-daughters with a plastic bag — and raping the oldest girl after she was dead.

His arrest early Tuesday capped a furious police investigation into the brutal triple slaying of Gladys Machado, 29 and Julia and Daniela Padrino, ages 8 and 4. A neighbor found their bodies last week laid out inside the master bedroom closet of a home where the couple used to live.

The shocking details emerged Tuesday as Miami-Dade police charged Sierra, 28, with three counts of first-degree murder and two of sexual battery.

He was being held without bail at the main Miami-Dade County Jail. Prosecutors likely will seek the death penalty, though the decision is weeks away.

Sierra, a convicted felon, was long the main focus of the investigation and confessed Monday night after hours of questioning.

The couple recently split up. Machado, a mother of three, had been living with her grandmother in Homestead while Sierra had moved into his mother’s townhome in Kendall.

Machado was last seen the evening of Nov. 10 when she left Homestead for a shopping trip with her two daughters. She left her 6-year-old son with her grandmother.

According to an arrest report, Sierra accompanied Machado and her daughters to the Mall of the Americas in Machado’s gold Nissan Altima.

When Machado received a phone call from another man, the two began to argue. Sierra grabbed a knife in the car and stabbed her.

He then drove Machado and her children back to their former home in Flagami, less than two miles from the mall.

There, Sierra locked the daughters in an adjacent bedroom and tied up Machado in the master bedroom, demanding the password to her phone.

Using a plastic bag, he suffocated her. After she died, Sierra raped her, according to the report.

Then, he turned his attention to the children, according to the police report by Miami-Dade Detective Juan Chaidez. The oldest daughter, Julia had knocked on the door asking to go to the bathroom. Sierra allowed her out and suffocated her. He suffocated Daniela, who had fallen asleep. According to the report, Sierra returned the master bedroom, where Julia’s body was, and raped her.

He placed all three bodies in the closet, cleaned the inside of the house and left.

A popular figure in the Haitian music industry wanted for the double-homicide of his ex-girlfriend and her well-known reggae dancehall artist boyfriend in New York died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a North Miami-Dade apartment after U.S. Marshal police officers surrounded the building.

The U.S. Marshals’ fugitive taskforce followed Joseph Kernizan’s trail from New York to North Miami. Police feared he would flee to his native Haiti.

Interviews with several of Kernizan’s acquaintances led investigators to a North Miami apartment building on Northwest 157th Street and Second Avenue, said Barry Golden, a spokesman with the U.S. Marshals office.

Golden said federal agents arrived at the North Miami quadruplex at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday.

"We surrounded that location from all sides. We pulled in one of our vehicles, we had lights and a PA and we asked for residents of the apartments to step outside," he said.

At one point, investigators saw Kernizan stick his head out of a ground-floor apartment window, Golden said. He then attempted to run out a back door, but when he saw police officers he shut the door and locked it, Golden said.

Minutes later, someone who had been inside the apartment with Kernizan came out and police heard shots. Police entered the one-bedroom apartment through a back window.

"When we went in, he was dead," Golden said. Kernizan shot himself, he said. Police say they found three handguns and two loaded AK-47 guns at the scene.

On Tuesday morning, a mourner dropped off flowers at the site where Robert Labranche was murdered.

Monday evening, a gunman opened fire at the car wash near 770 Northwest 54th Street. According to police, the victim stopped at the car wash and someone shot him as his daughter and son sat inside the car near by.

Family members identified the victim as Labranche, a.k.a Bizzle or Chowtime, a well-liked Miami rapper.

Dozens of family members and friends crowded the area to pay their respects. "He don't bother nobody; he's always doing his job. He's a hardworking man," said a friend.

The victim's sister devastated by the shooting, cried out as a loved one tried to console her. "Oh my brother, they killed my brother for nothing," she wailed.

Inconsolable relatives rushed police officers and passed crime scene tape forcing officers to restrain them. "They obviously wanted to grab that family member here, they wanted to grab him one last time, possibly," said Miami Police Detective Willie Moreno.

Police said Labranche's kids were not harmed. "Fortunately, they didn't see the actual incident and they are currently right now unharmed with family members," said Moreno.

According to friends, Labranche owned part of the car wash. "He got killed over here apparently, because he was trying to save his business," said a friend.

Police are looking for a man wearing all black that fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Friends said they don't know why anyone would want to kill Labranche but they hope police track the gunman down. "Just take a look around you man, this is the love," said a friend, with arms stretched to the large crowd of people who flooded the street. "This is the love right here. That's a good guy man."

If you have any information on this murder, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.

From the Miami Herald:

Investigators with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are examining evidence from a deadly boating accident in Biscayne Bay.

But so far, investigators believe the 27-year-old man who died after his personal watercraft collided with a boat was travelling fast in a slow-speed area and wasn’t supposed to be on a personal watercraft at all at night, said Jorge Pino, spokesman with the wildlife agency.

Carlos Alberto Fernandez was riding a Yamaha personal watercraft on the bay when the accident occurred that killed him. A friend of his, Jose Luis Moreno, was on another watercraft.

Pino said Fernandez’s watercraft was not rented, but appeared to be borrowed. Investigators were looking into how fast he was travelling and why the two men were on the water at night. Only Fernandez struck the other boat, a 22-foot vessel with a family on board, headed to port.

“It’s hard enough to spot a vessel with navigational lights and proper safety equipment,” Pino said. “Now you have a personal watercraft at night at a high rate of speed. It’s just a recipe for disaster.”

Florida has a longstanding rule that personal watercraft can only operate during daylight, starting half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset.

"For a while he was acting nice. Then he got flustered. He probably remembered something that happened on the beach and was not happy about it," Poppo told investigators in the interview that was taped July 19 and first reported Wednesday by Miami news station WFOR-TV.

Poppo said Eugene then "turned berserk" and attacked with his bare hands, screaming that both men would die.

"He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically, that's all there is to say about it," Poppo said.

Poppo, 65, remains in a long-term care facility after losing an eye, his eyebrows, his nose and parts of his forehead and right cheek in the May 26 attack. His other eye was severely damaged.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center said last month that Poppo was in good spirits, talking and walking around, but would need several more surgeries before he could explore the options for reconstructing his face.

Eugene, 31, was shot and killed by a Miami police officer during the attack on the Macarthur Causeway just off downtown Miami. Lab tests found only marijuana in Eugene's system, but no other drugs or alcohol.

Poppo said Eugene had said something about not being able "to score," adding that Eugene "must have been souped up on something."

In the police interview, Poppo sometimes seems confused about some details of the attack. He described Eugene wearing a green shirt and getting out of a car, but surveillance video recorded from security cameras on The Miami Herald building showed a naked Eugene walking up to Poppo as cars and bicyclists zipped by. Poppo was reclining on the sidewalk near the parking garage where he lived.

Police asked Poppo whether he provoked Eugene.

"What could provoke an attack of that type?" Poppo said. "I didn't curse at the guy or say anything mean or nasty."

Poppo also thanked the police for saving his life, saying the officer who shot Eugene

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A pedestrian struck by a hit and run driver remains in critical condition, Thursday. The driver charged with the crime has been identified and remains behind bars.

According to police, Robert Sinn's vehicle hopped the curb and crashed into a bus stop along Northeast 64th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A man who was on his way home from the grocery store was standing on the sidewalk and eating an apple when Sinn struck him. The victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he is fighting for his life. He has not been identified pending the notification of his next-of-kin. Authorities have only said the victim is in his mid-40s.

Police said Sinn, 33, knocked down a palm tree and a light pole as he knocked the pedestrian 30 feet away from where he was originally standing. Miami Fire Rescue Lieutenant Ignatius Carroll said, "When fire rescue arrived, he was basically wrapped right next to that bus bench pole that you see over there, about a good 30 feet away from where his shoe is."

The victim had just come from the grocery store when he was suddenly hit. "He was bleeding from the face," said a man who found the victim after the crash. "I think he was in a coma or something."

Police said Sinn got out of the car to look at the victim, then got back into his vehicle and fled the scene. Police said he offered no help to the victim.

However, Sinn did not get very far. "Luckily, one of our motormen in the nearby area was able to capture him just blocks down from the initial accident [scene]," said Miami Police Officer Kenia Reyes.

Police administered a field sobriety test to Sinn at the scene. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested. According to Miami Police, after Sinn was placed in the back of the cruiser, he said, "I fell asleep at the wheel."

Sinn has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury and DUI. He's being held on $105,000 bond.

MIAMI (CBS4) – A Miami-Dade Judge delivered harsh words Thursday to a Delray Beach man who is accused of drunk driving when he struck and nearly killed a pedestrian in Miami.

An arrest report says 33-year-old Robert Sinn told Police that he “fell asleep” at the wheel before his white Chevrolet impala jumped a curb, knocked down a pole and then struck the victim on Biscayne Boulevard at Northeast 64th St. as the victim was standing on the sidewalk with a bag of groceries.

Witnesses say the victim was thrown some 30 feet and was found wrapped around a bus stop pole at the scene.

The report also says Sinn got out of his car and went over to the badly-injured victim as he lay on the ground and yelled at him. Then he went back to his car and left, the report says. They say an “alert motorman” stopped Sinn just a few blocks away from the accident scene on Northeast 64th St. at Northeast 7th Ave.

After Judge Ariana Fajardo announced some of the charges against Sinn in bond court, she took a few minutes to read the arrest report. And then she said, “Some of the allegations are very disturbing. The allegations from the A Form are that he struck the pedestrian. He got out of his car. He went over to the pedestrian and yelled at the pedestrian and left.”

At the crash scene, veteran Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll was also concerned.

“You would think the reaction would be that you did something wrong,” he told CBS4’s Peter D’Oench. “And because of that, you would check on someone’s well being and then call 911. He didn’t do that.”

According to the arrest report, Sinn told police he “fell asleep at the wheel” and then asked an officer, “Is the guy I hit going to be ok.”

There are nine charges against Sinn including DUI with serious bodily injury to another person, leaving the scene of a crash with an injury, driving with a suspended license and DUI with damage to property or a person.

The world is calling Rudy Eugene, who chewed off a homeless man’s face, a cannibal — but an autopsy shows there was no human flesh in his stomach.

The post-death examination did reveal a number of undigested pills in his stomach, but investigators have not identified them yet, a law-enforcement source told The Miami Herald.

A Miami police officer shot and killed Eugene, 31, on May 26 as he attacked a homeless man in broad daylight off the MacArthur Causeway, tearing off his face with his teeth. By the time police arrived, most of the victim’s face was gone. Police found pieces of torn skin on the concrete sidewalk where the attack occurred.

Fueled by the Internet and widespread interest in the macabre case, some media reports have dubbed Eugene the “Causeway Cannibal” and the “Miami Zombie.”

The chatter even led the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a statement last week denying the existence of a zombie virus, and Los Angeles celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred to hold a much-panned press conference in Miami decrying the ills of cannibalism.

The victim of the vicious flesh-eating attacker on the MacArthur Causeway on Saturday has been identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, The Miami Herald has learned.

Poppo remains in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center with horrific facial injuries.

His attacker, killed by Miami police at the crime scene, has also been identified as Rudy Eugene, who as a teenager in the late 1990s played high school football at North Miami Beach High.

How the men's paths crossed in such a violent act remains unclear.

More recently, court records show that Eugene was married in 2005 and divorced in 2007. According to the filing, he had no income and his assets included $2 cash and $50 for a cellphone.

His former wife, Jenny Ductant, agreed to take on the couple's debt, which included the power and phone bills.

"I don't want to talk about it," she said Tuesday when reached on her cellphone.

The man Eugene attacked remained in extremely critical condition Monday at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Much of his face was gone, the skin ripped away, the nose bitten and the eyes gouged.

What remained was his goatee and little else.

Photos of the scene with Eugene and his victim quickly went viral on the Internet Monday.

“We’re hoping that he pulls through, for his well-being, but also so he can tell us what happened,” said Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami police union. “Only he knows.”

Details about Eugene's life in South Florida were emerging on Tuesday.

As a teenager, he lived in North Miami-Dade, attending North Miami Beach High and North Miami High, where he was on the football team.

The Miami Herald has obtained photographs of Eugene from North Miami Beach High yearbooks. One photograph was taken in 1997; the other was taken in 1998 when he was a junior. A group shot of the high school football team incudes Eugene.

Eugene transferred to North Miami Senior for his final year of high school, North Miami Beach Principal Raymond Fontana said on Tuesday.

He was killed by police on Saturday as a macabre scene unfolded about 2 p.m. on the MacArthur Causeway’s off-ramp to Biscayne Boulevard just south of the Miami Herald building. A Road Ranger spotted Eugene and his victim in what appeared to be a violent struggle and shouted on his loudspeaker for the naked attacker to back away.

One witness said he was riding his bicycle on the MacArthur when he saw a man tearing off pieces of the victim’s flesh with his mouth. After an officer approached, Larry Vega told WSVN-FOX7, “The guy just stood, his head up like that, with pieces of flesh in his mouth. And he growled.”

Eugene left behind few clues as to what could have prompted the attack.

“I wouldn’t say he had mental problem but he always felt like people was against him . .. No one was for him, everyone was against him,” his ex-wife told WPLG.

He had just one arrest to suggest serious violence. Miami Beach police arrested him on a battery charge when he was 16, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The charge was later dropped.

He was arrested seven other times over five years. Court records show that one was for misdemeanor battery, one was for vending near a school, one was for trespassing and four involved marijuana.

The last case came in September 2009. In January, the charge was dropped.

During Saturday’s attack, an officer approached and told Eugene to get off his victim, but Eugene ignored the order and kept chewing, even after the officer shot him once.

The officer fired again, hitting him several more times, eventually killing him. The name of that officer was not released.

Security video from the adjacent Miami Herald building captured snippets of the violence as the two men — one dead, the other gravely injured and wearing only a shirt — lay on the sidewalk as officers arrived. .

Days later, the chatter, theories and questions continued. The ghoulish event even spawned a Twitter account, dubbed The Miami Zombie.

An emergency room doctor at Jackson Memorial Hospital said Eugene’s attack could have been induced by bath salts, a drug nicknamed after the bathroom product it resembles.

Police theorized earlier that it was “cocaine psychosis,” a drug-induced craze that bakes the body internally and often leads those it affects to strip naked to try to cool off.

Investigators asked any witnesses who have not stepped forward to call the Miami police homicide unit at 305-603-6350.

A police officer arrived to help, but the mauler growled at him and continued to chew away, stopping only when he was shot to death.

Miami police said little Tuesday about the attack, which took place Saturday afternoon in the shadow of The Miami Herald headquarters. Surveillance video from the newspaper's security camera showed cars, motorcycles, pedestrians and bicyclists passing by.

The victim, identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, a homeless man who lived under the causeway, was in critical condition.

"He had his face eaten down to his goatee. The forehead was just bone. No nose, no mouth," said Sgt. Armando Aguilar, president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police. "In my opinion, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Here’s a timeline of the key moments in the Saturday, May 26, Miami Herald security video of the flesh-eating attack on the MacArthur Causeway.

The video is from a rooftop camera on the southwest corner of the six-story Herald building. On the right center of the screen is a Herald parking garage. Above it, right to left across the screen, is North Bayshore Drive, running between the Herald parking lot and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

Diagonally across the bottom of the frame is the Metromover track. The roadway on the left is the MacArthur Causeway offramp heading west, toward the top of the screen, in the direction of the Arsht Center.

The scene of the attack, at the left bottom edge of the frame, is separated from the roadway by a concrete barrier. The view of the attack and the aftermath is blocked at times by palm trees and the Metromover track.

The video timestamp begins at 13:54 — 1:54 p.m. It’s a sunny day. Palm trees wave. Cars zip by on the causeway. The Herald parking lot sits empty. There is a person sitting in the corner of the video, near the walkway along the causeway.

13:54:49: The attacker, later identified as Rudy Eugene, staggers up to the man on the walkway, later identified as Ronald Poppo.

13:54:56: The encounter starts. A second later, a bicyclist rides by.

13:55:00: The attacker bends down. Shadows bob and weave. The attacker leans over the victim. Shadows and palm trees hide most of the view.

13:56:55: The Metromover goes by.

13:57:22: The attacker gets up and moves. A few seconds later, he rolls the victim down the walkway and continues pulling and kicking the him for several seconds.

13:57:47: The attacker stands over him and gets down on his knees, straddling the victim’s head. He seems to tug at the victim. The attacker starts punching the victim.

13:58:23: The attacker shifts the victim’s position, moving him over. He still straddles the victim and leans into him with his face. For several minutes, he comes up then leans forward and down into the victim.

13:59:37: The attacker stands up, grabs the victim and drags him further down the walkway. He drops the victim, walks around and tugs at the victim’s legs, trying to pull at something. The movement is hidden behind shadows and palm trees. But the two figures can be made out, one on the ground, the other leaning over him.

14:03:19: A second bicyclist rides by, slowing down as the bicycle nears where the attack is happening. A white car passes by and slows down, crawling by the attack scene. The bicyclist zips away, then turns around and comes back. The car moves on.

14:10:56: A third person with a bicycle walks by. A few seconds later, he gets on the bike and rides away.

14:11:28: A police car between the Herald parking lot and the Arsht Center moves toward the attack scene. It starts to get on the MacArthur Causeway but in the wrong direction.

14:11:47: Another bicyclist goes by.

14:11:58: The police car makes a U-turn and moves toward the attack scene.

14:12:06: A fourth bicyclist stops, then keeps going.

14:13:13: The police car arrives on the scene, driving the wrong way on the offramp. The officer gets out of the vehicle and walks around on the side of his car.

14:13:27: The officer draws his gun. The view of the shooting of the blocked by the Metromover track.

14:14:28: More police cars arrive.

14:15:20: The security camera zooms in on the attack scene.

14:16:16: The victim moves his legs

14:19:44: The victim sits up. His hands and legs are covered in blood. He’s naked from the waist down. The attacker’s legs are view on the ground, but there is no movement.

14:22:50: Three paramedics appear and hop over the concrete barrier with a stretcher.

14:23:40: Paramedics drag the victim onto the stretcher.

14:24:07: The victim moves his arms and touches his head.

Miami police spokesperson Det. Willie Moreno said Clark and Williams had argued before he left her apartment. Williams apparently called police and Clark, who lives nearby, returned to her apartment, angry about the call.
Miami-Dade police homicide detectives, who are investigating the shooting, on Friday night identified the teen as Danny Cruz.
Investigators found a .380 handgun in Cruz’s right jacket pocket. According to a police spokesman, the officer repeatedly ordered Cruz to show his hands before firing.

The shooting took place inside a Chevron gas station, 801 N. Roosevelt Blvd. at 10:40 p.m.

Cruz’s family defended the teen Friday, insisting he was not armed or involved in gang activity.

“I’m sure whatever he was doing, he didn’t deserve what was done to him,” mother Sarah Garcia told WFOR-CBS4. “I don’t believe he was out to hurt anyone. I believe he was just there. I don’t believe he pulled out a gun.”
