Victim of Miami cannibal speaks of attack

MIAMI (AP) -- A homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre assault alongside a busy South Florida highway told police that his attacker "just ripped me to ribbons."

In a recorded interview with investigators, Ronald Poppo said the man who approached him initially seemed friendly. Then the man, Rudy Eugene, seemed to become angry about something that had happened on Miami Beach, where thousands were partying through the Memorial Day weekend.

"For a while he was acting nice. Then he got flustered. He probably remembered something that happened on the beach and was not happy about it," Poppo told investigators in the interview that was taped July 19 and first reported Wednesday by Miami news station WFOR-TV.

Poppo said Eugene then "turned berserk" and attacked with his bare hands, screaming that both men would die.

"He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically, that's all there is to say about it," Poppo said.

Poppo, 65, remains in a long-term care facility after losing an eye, his eyebrows, his nose and parts of his forehead and right cheek in the May 26 attack. His other eye was severely damaged.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center said last month that Poppo was in good spirits, talking and walking around, but would need several more surgeries before he could explore the options for reconstructing his face.

Eugene, 31, was shot and killed by a Miami police officer during the attack on the Macarthur Causeway just off downtown Miami. Lab tests found only marijuana in Eugene's system, but no other drugs or alcohol.

Poppo said Eugene had said something about not being able "to score," adding that Eugene "must have been souped up on something."

In the police interview, Poppo sometimes seems confused about some details of the attack. He described Eugene wearing a green shirt and getting out of a car, but surveillance video recorded from security cameras on The Miami Herald building showed a naked Eugene walking up to Poppo as cars and bicyclists zipped by. Poppo was reclining on the sidewalk near the parking garage where he lived.

Police asked Poppo whether he provoked Eugene.

"What could provoke an attack of that type?" Poppo said. "I didn't curse at the guy or say anything mean or nasty."

Poppo also thanked the police for saving his life, saying the officer who shot Eugene

Stock analyst Robert Sinn charged with DUI in Miami hit and run

MIAMI (WSVN) -- A pedestrian struck by a hit and run driver remains in critical condition, Thursday. The driver charged with the crime has been identified and remains behind bars.

According to police, Robert Sinn's vehicle hopped the curb and crashed into a bus stop along Northeast 64th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A man who was on his way home from the grocery store was standing on the sidewalk and eating an apple when Sinn struck him. The victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he is fighting for his life. He has not been identified pending the notification of his next-of-kin. Authorities have only said the victim is in his mid-40s.

Police said Sinn, 33, knocked down a palm tree and a light pole as he knocked the pedestrian 30 feet away from where he was originally standing. Miami Fire Rescue Lieutenant Ignatius Carroll said, "When fire rescue arrived, he was basically wrapped right next to that bus bench pole that you see over there, about a good 30 feet away from where his shoe is."

The victim had just come from the grocery store when he was suddenly hit. "He was bleeding from the face," said a man who found the victim after the crash. "I think he was in a coma or something."

Police said Sinn got out of the car to look at the victim, then got back into his vehicle and fled the scene. Police said he offered no help to the victim.

However, Sinn did not get very far. "Luckily, one of our motormen in the nearby area was able to capture him just blocks down from the initial accident [scene]," said Miami Police Officer Kenia Reyes.

Police administered a field sobriety test to Sinn at the scene. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested. According to Miami Police, after Sinn was placed in the back of the cruiser, he said, "I fell asleep at the wheel."

Sinn has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury and DUI. He's being held on $105,000 bond.

MIAMI (CBS4) – A Miami-Dade Judge delivered harsh words Thursday to a Delray Beach man who is accused of drunk driving when he struck and nearly killed a pedestrian in Miami.

An arrest report says 33-year-old Robert Sinn told Police that he “fell asleep” at the wheel before his white Chevrolet impala jumped a curb, knocked down a pole and then struck the victim on Biscayne Boulevard at Northeast 64th St. as the victim was standing on the sidewalk with a bag of groceries.

Witnesses say the victim was thrown some 30 feet and was found wrapped around a bus stop pole at the scene.

The report also says Sinn got out of his car and went over to the badly-injured victim as he lay on the ground and yelled at him. Then he went back to his car and left, the report says. They say an “alert motorman” stopped Sinn just a few blocks away from the accident scene on Northeast 64th St. at Northeast 7th Ave.

After Judge Ariana Fajardo announced some of the charges against Sinn in bond court, she took a few minutes to read the arrest report. And then she said, “Some of the allegations are very disturbing. The allegations from the A Form are that he struck the pedestrian. He got out of his car. He went over to the pedestrian and yelled at the pedestrian and left.”

At the crash scene, veteran Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll was also concerned.

“You would think the reaction would be that you did something wrong,” he told CBS4’s Peter D’Oench. “And because of that, you would check on someone’s well being and then call 911. He didn’t do that.”

According to the arrest report, Sinn told police he “fell asleep at the wheel” and then asked an officer, “Is the guy I hit going to be ok.”

There are nine charges against Sinn including DUI with serious bodily injury to another person, leaving the scene of a crash with an injury, driving with a suspended license and DUI with damage to property or a person.

Paul Royal murdered just days before leaving for college

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) – The parents of an 18-year-old football player who was gunned down just days before he was planning to leave for college are speaking out and asking for the public’s help in solving a senseless murder.

“Yes, I need some answers. That’s it. I need some,” said a grieving Tiffany Davis in an exclusive interview with CBS4’s Peter D’Oench.

Her son, Paul Royal, was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while sitting in a car outside a home on N.W. 28th Court at N.W. 201st St. in Miami Gardens, according to Miami Gardens Police.

“He meant so much to me,” said Tiffany Davis. “He meant the world to me. He was my first born.”

“It’s like he was snatched away from us,” said Royal’s father, Damion Davis. “He didn’t deserve this. Words can not express our loss. I mean we are still asking ourselves why.”

Royal, who was known as “P.J.,” had played outside and middle linebacker for Carol City High School.

He was packing to leave on Saturday for Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, where he had a full scholarship.

Four killed in accident outside Marlins Stadium

From CBS4: Four people are dead after a mini-van plowed through pedestrians walking on a sidewalk just after the Marlins game had ended in Little Havana Saturday night.

Police said a man in his 60’s might have suffered a medical condition and when he veered off of the road in the 1700 block of NW 7^th Street and ran over three children and a grandmother.

Investigators said the driver of the red mini van died and so did the grandmother, a 14 year old boy and thirteen year old girl. A ten year old girl survived with multiple injuries. The family was visiting from Georgia and had just left the Marlins game when they were hit.

Rudy Eugene used his teeth to savage a homeless man, but an autopsy revealed he had no human flesh in his stomach.

The world is calling Rudy Eugene, who chewed off a homeless man’s face, a cannibal — but an autopsy shows there was no human flesh in his stomach.

The post-death examination did reveal a number of undigested pills in his stomach, but investigators have not identified them yet, a law-enforcement source told The Miami Herald.

A Miami police officer shot and killed Eugene, 31, on May 26 as he attacked a homeless man in broad daylight off the MacArthur Causeway, tearing off his face with his teeth. By the time police arrived, most of the victim’s face was gone. Police found pieces of torn skin on the concrete sidewalk where the attack occurred.

Fueled by the Internet and widespread interest in the macabre case, some media reports have dubbed Eugene the “Causeway Cannibal” and the “Miami Zombie.”

The chatter even led the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a statement last week denying the existence of a zombie virus, and Los Angeles celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred to hold a much-panned press conference in Miami decrying the ills of cannibalism.

The victim of the vicious flesh-eating attacker on the MacArthur Causeway on Saturday has been identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, The Miami Herald has learned.

Poppo remains in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center with horrific facial injuries.

His attacker, killed by Miami police at the crime scene, has also been identified as Rudy Eugene, who as a teenager in the late 1990s played high school football at North Miami Beach High.

How the men's paths crossed in such a violent act remains unclear.

More recently, court records show that Eugene was married in 2005 and divorced in 2007. According to the filing, he had no income and his assets included $2 cash and $50 for a cellphone.

His former wife, Jenny Ductant, agreed to take on the couple's debt, which included the power and phone bills.

"I don't want to talk about it," she said Tuesday when reached on her cellphone.

The man Eugene attacked remained in extremely critical condition Monday at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Much of his face was gone, the skin ripped away, the nose bitten and the eyes gouged.

What remained was his goatee and little else.

Photos of the scene with Eugene and his victim quickly went viral on the Internet Monday.

“We’re hoping that he pulls through, for his well-being, but also so he can tell us what happened,” said Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami police union. “Only he knows.”

Details about Eugene's life in South Florida were emerging on Tuesday.

As a teenager, he lived in North Miami-Dade, attending North Miami Beach High and North Miami High, where he was on the football team.

The Miami Herald has obtained photographs of Eugene from North Miami Beach High yearbooks. One photograph was taken in 1997; the other was taken in 1998 when he was a junior. A group shot of the high school football team incudes Eugene.

Eugene transferred to North Miami Senior for his final year of high school, North Miami Beach Principal Raymond Fontana said on Tuesday.

He was killed by police on Saturday as a macabre scene unfolded about 2 p.m. on the MacArthur Causeway’s off-ramp to Biscayne Boulevard just south of the Miami Herald building. A Road Ranger spotted Eugene and his victim in what appeared to be a violent struggle and shouted on his loudspeaker for the naked attacker to back away.

One witness said he was riding his bicycle on the MacArthur when he saw a man tearing off pieces of the victim’s flesh with his mouth. After an officer approached, Larry Vega told WSVN-FOX7, “The guy just stood, his head up like that, with pieces of flesh in his mouth. And he growled.”

Eugene left behind few clues as to what could have prompted the attack.

“I wouldn’t say he had mental problem but he always felt like people was against him . .. No one was for him, everyone was against him,” his ex-wife told WPLG.

He had just one arrest to suggest serious violence. Miami Beach police arrested him on a battery charge when he was 16, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The charge was later dropped.

He was arrested seven other times over five years. Court records show that one was for misdemeanor battery, one was for vending near a school, one was for trespassing and four involved marijuana.

The last case came in September 2009. In January, the charge was dropped.

During Saturday’s attack, an officer approached and told Eugene to get off his victim, but Eugene ignored the order and kept chewing, even after the officer shot him once.

The officer fired again, hitting him several more times, eventually killing him. The name of that officer was not released.

Security video from the adjacent Miami Herald building captured snippets of the violence as the two men — one dead, the other gravely injured and wearing only a shirt — lay on the sidewalk as officers arrived. .

Days later, the chatter, theories and questions continued. The ghoulish event even spawned a Twitter account, dubbed The Miami Zombie.

An emergency room doctor at Jackson Memorial Hospital said Eugene’s attack could have been induced by bath salts, a drug nicknamed after the bathroom product it resembles.

Police theorized earlier that it was “cocaine psychosis,” a drug-induced craze that bakes the body internally and often leads those it affects to strip naked to try to cool off.

Investigators asked any witnesses who have not stepped forward to call the Miami police homicide unit at 305-603-6350.

Even Miami police shocked by gore in face-eating attack

MIAMI -- It is being called one of this city's goriest crimes: A naked man was on top of another nude man along a busy highway, biting into the man's face, tearing it to pieces. A police officer arrived to help, but the mauler growled at him and continued to chew away, stopping only when he was shot to death.

Miami police said little Tuesday about the attack, which took place Saturday afternoon in the shadow of The Miami Herald headquarters. Surveillance video from the newspaper's security camera showed cars, motorcycles, pedestrians and bicyclists passing by.

The victim, identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, a homeless man who lived under the causeway, was in critical condition.

"He had his face eaten down to his goatee. The forehead was just bone. No nose, no mouth," said Sgt. Armando Aguilar, president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police. "In my opinion, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The video is from a rooftop camera on the southwest corner of the six-story Herald building. On the right center of the screen is a Herald parking garage. Diagonally across the bottom of the frame is the Metromover track. The roadway on the left is the MacArthur Causeway offramp heading west, toward the top of the screen, in the direction of the Arsht Center.

13:54:49: The attacker, later identified as Rudy Eugene, staggers up to the man on the walkway, later identified as Ronald Poppo.

13:54:56: The encounter starts. A second later, a bicyclist rides by.

13:55:00: The attacker bends down. Shadows bob and weave. The attacker leans over the victim. Shadows and palm trees hide most of the view.

13:56:55: The Metromover goes by.

13:57:22: The attacker gets up and moves. A few seconds later, he rolls the victim down the walkway and continues pulling and kicking the him for several seconds.

13:57:47: The attacker stands over him and gets down on his knees, straddling the victim’s head. He seems to tug at the victim. The attacker starts punching the victim.

13:58:23: The attacker shifts the victim’s position, moving him over. He still straddles the victim and leans into him with his face. For several minutes, he comes up then leans forward and down into the victim.

13:59:37: The attacker stands up, grabs the victim and drags him further down the walkway. He drops the victim, walks around and tugs at the victim’s legs, trying to pull at something. The movement is hidden behind shadows and palm trees. But the two figures can be made out, one on the ground, the other leaning over him.

Bertram Clark kills girlfriend as her children watch

Miami police are hunting a man on the lam after he allegedly shot his wife in front of her children, and left her to die in a pool of blood.

Police are trying to find 42-year-old Bertram Clark, last seen running out of the apartment of 25-year-old Shanquendra Quenishea Williams in the 1200 block of NW First place in Miami, shortly after midnight Monday morning.

Miami police spokesperson Det. Willie Moreno said Clark and Williams had argued before he left her apartment. Williams apparently called police and Clark, who lives nearby, returned to her apartment, angry about the call.

Investigators say Clark apparently pulled out his gun and pistol-whipped Williams while her children watched. As his anger grew, police said he used the pistol to shoot her, multiple times, with the children in the room, before running out.

Cops shoot and kill 16 year-old Danny Cruz at Homestead gas station

A Homestead police officer shot and killed a 16-year-old inside a gas station convenience store late Thursday after a clerk pushed an alarm panic button during a run-in with the teen.

Miami-Dade police homicide detectives, who are investigating the shooting, on Friday night identified the teen as Danny Cruz.

Investigators found a .380 handgun in Cruz’s right jacket pocket. According to a police spokesman, the officer repeatedly ordered Cruz to show his hands before firing.

The shooting took place inside a Chevron gas station, 801 N. Roosevelt Blvd. at 10:40 p.m.

Cruz’s family defended the teen Friday, insisting he was not armed or involved in gang activity.

“I’m sure whatever he was doing, he didn’t deserve what was done to him,” mother Sarah Garcia told WFOR-CBS4. “I don’t believe he was out to hurt anyone. I believe he was just there. I don’t believe he pulled out a gun.”

The officer, Elvis Ackerman, 31, has been placed on administrative duty, which is routine in police shootings. Union president John Rivera called the shooting “textbook” and said the officer was in fear for his life when he fired his weapon.
